How To Choose Your Embroidered Sweatshirt
Choosing a sweatshirt to embroider can be more difficult than you might think. With a range of brands available and many different styles, fabrics and colours to choose from, it can be a difficult and time consuming process to narrow down your selection to one that best meets your embroidered sweatshirt needs.
This brief guide will hopefully help you through the process for embroidering a sweatshirt and help you make the right choice in selecting an appropriate sweatshirt.
First things first, we need to consider the embroidered logo. Sweatshirt fabric is in many ways an ideal fabric to apply an embroidered logo. The main consideration is the size of the logo itself and more specifically the number of stitches it contains. More stitches equal more weight so we need to be careful that the embroidered logo is not too heavy for the sweatshirt fabric as this may distort the shape of the garment. An average size left chest logo is approximately 5000 stitches in total. This would provide a good size embroidery that would fit nicely onto the left chest of a sweatshirt. The same size logo with many infill stitches could increase the size of the embroidery to 8000 to 10,000 stitches. In general, most sweatshirts are made from heavy enough fabric to hold most embroidered logo’s. It should only be something you will need to consider if you are putting a large logo onto the front or the rear of your sweatshirt.
What fabric weights are sweatshirts available in? A lighter weight style sweatshirt is usually around 240gsm (grams per square metre) with a heavyweight sweatshirt 300gsm plus. As you can see there is quite a difference and your choice may be dictated by the environment your embroidered sweatshirt will be worn in.
Next is the style of the sweatshirt. We have a number of different to choose from, many with slightly different takes on the standard sweatshirt. The style of your sweatshirt is mainly a personal choice as almost all will accommodate an embroidered logo in much the same way.
The third point is fabric. We will discuss the fabric choice in a separate article, but suffice to say the fabric of almost all our sweatshirt will be able to have an embroidered logo applied to it.
The fourth point is something that you may wish to consider and that’s the brand of sweatshirt. The main point to contemplate is whether or not the style you choose will still be around in the same in 6 or 12 months time? This factor comes into play if your embroidered sweatshirt is going to be a garment you will need to re order for staff uniform or a future event. You will need to pick a brand that will manufacture your chosen polo shirt in the future so you can get a consistent garment for your logo.
Final point is the price. We have left this point last as in our experience it is often the deciding factor when selecting an embroidered sweatshirt. As you would expect with a large choice comes a large price range. Price can be affected by many things: fabric, style, weight and brand are all. The other cost involved will obviously be the application of the embroidery onto your sweatshirt. An embroidery charge is based on the number of stitches within your logo or text and is priced per 1000 stitches. Therefore, the smaller the embroidery, the cheaper the price.
So, which sweatshirts do we recommend at JKL Clothing? Over the last 20 years we have seen many brands come and go within the embroidered sweatshirt industry. There are 3 main exceptions to this which are Fruit of the Loom, Gildan and Russell (formerly Jerzees). In our experience these brands offer the consistency, quality and value that make for an ideal choice when looking to purchase an embroidered sweatshirt
