It is astounding how much difference a small piece of fabric can make to your comfort. A scarf at the neck will keep you amazingly warm. If you are still wearing one indoors when you return from a walk outside you soon have to undo it or remove it as the heat becomes too much.

A scarf is also tremendously handy if you have need of a hood to keep your head warm or ear protection from stiff breezes when you walk a winter shoreline. It might not look pretty but is can save you from an excruciating earache. If your hands have become cold and you don’t have gloves, or even if you do, wrapping your hands in the scarf will soon bring sensation back to numbed fingers and have you comfortable again.

As most scarves are looped or folded at the neck they aren’t as prone to being blown away as hats might be and unlike hats and gloves particularly, they don’t get stuffed into pockets only to drop out and be lost.

Doubling up as something warm to sit on outdoors or to cover your thighs with when you take a break from your activity the versatility and adaptability of a scarf makes it an essential wardrobe item. They are very fashionable items and with some styles having an integral zipped compartment they can provide handy storage for small items too.
