Belts

Belts are not just accessories, they are functional items too. If you need to make sure your trousers sit correctly, comfortably and don’t slip down your hips than a belt becomes an essential item.

The loops on the waistband of trousers are there for a purpose – to thread a belt through them. Most waistbands will have five loops so that the belt can evenly take the strain on the fabric and hold the trousers tidily. It is important that you do make sure to thread the belt through all the available loops so that they don’t tear and hang limply, making your trousers look scruffy.

Leather is always popular for making belts as it can be fabricated in a continuous strip so that it is strong and no seams compromise the integrity of its construction. The natural variations in hide mean that leather can have an interesting integral pattern from the grain and the surface – think of the differences between crocodile and snakeskin, two very different looks but equally attractive in appearance and functional purpose.

Webbed canvas also makes great belts and allows for different styles of buckles and clasps as fastenings. Belts with interchangeable buckles mean you can have a different look with the same pair of trousers whenever you fancy a change.
