Gym Towels

A gym towel is an essential item for both hygiene and safety purposes. Sweat in itself is not the dreadful odorous beast it has the reputation of being, all it does is act as a medium for bacterial activity. All sorts of bacteria and microbes are on the surface of our skin and as we shed many dead skin cells daily there is plenty of foodstuff for the microbes when conditions are ideal.

Heat, moisture, oxygen and foodstuff allow the microbes to feed and reproduce (at alarming rates). Sweat, providing the moisture where the activity takes places captures the byproducts of the bacterial feast and as it contains phenolic compounds that are odour active the result is a bad smell is it is left on the skin. A gym towel can wipe sweat away – leaving the body free of the micro organisms that cause the bad smell but the towel will be sodden with the transfer and will need laundering to make sure no odour remains.

When using training equipment in a gym or a fitness suite there is often a transfer of sweat that can affect the grip of the item and compromise its safe use. It is only courteous and responsible to wipe down bars, benches and handles so that activities can be continued in safety and weights and other equipment are left in a good condition for other users.
