In certain sporting activities sleeveless T-shirts are the accepted style of sports top. Traditionally runners – road or track – weight lifters, basketball players, body builders and indoor wall climbers all prefer to wear sleeveless T-shirts. Freedom of movement, particularly around the shoulder area, is paramount.

The pumping action of arms in running can be impeded or at least irritated by a rubbing sleeve cuff and even small annoyances can interfere with concentration and affect performance form and times. Weightlifters and bodybuilders need to be able to see exactly what part of the muscle is being worked. Tension and shape give a good indication of the intensity being exerted upon the working area and gives information on how well it is working and whether good form and good technique is being displayed and utilised.

Loose and unhindered is the preferred style for those on the basketball court where extreme arm extension in making shots, giving passes and blocking in defence is commonplace. Any restrictions on arm movement can restrict the effectiveness of performance. Being such an intense and fast game, players work up a great amount of sweat and with air being able to circulate freely at least some of it can evaporate to allow more comfort.
