Tabards

Knowing who is on your side and which direction your team is playing might seem an obvious thing for players who have been playing football for many years. When trying out people for different positions or testing different combinations and swapping players from one side to another there can often be confusion (one which opposition members can take advantage of).

Wearing tabards offers an identity for players who have come together and are playing on the same side. It makes it easy for a game to be played in training kit as they can slip over whatever top is being worn and referees and linesmen can perform their match duties being able to call offside offences quite easily when the tabards of one colour are the wrong side of play according to the rules. Playing matches even in training has to be as close as possible to a fully competitive match so that reactions and skills used are appropriate, learned well and readily applied in a ‘real’ game situation.

Reversible tabards are available which is handy if you turn up for a tournament and the team strips are similar, one side or the other of a tabard is bound to be different enough from the opposition cololurs to make identification of players by officials easy.
