Football Socks
Football socks need to be fit for purpose. It is compulsory for shin guards to be worn at junior level and it is a good habit to develop that many senior players continue with.
Cushioning of the soles helps prevent abrasion of the skin and prevents blood blisters which can happen when friction from movement adjacent to fabric and sweat get together against the skin with painful results. Toe seams can cause friction on the top of the toes causing irritation and abrasion. Slippage can occur unless the design incorporates a double or cross weave, a mesh or an elasticated inset over the instep areas of the foot. Padding on the arch or an extra thickness of fabric in that area can give added comfort and materials that allow for flexibility with a snug, non-slip fit are elements to look for in a well-constructed sock. Ribbing needs to be supple; close enough to prevent slippage but not so tight as to be restrictive, loose enough to be comfortable but not so loose as to become saggy.
Who’d have though that hosiery manufacturers have so much to consider when making socks? For football players another thing that can help protect their feet is extra stitching around the ankle area to prevent injury and keep the joint warm.
