Considering the actual playing time of a senior football match it is one of the longest playing periods of time for a team game where all players are actively involved for the duration. An unsubstituted player can expect to be on a football pitch for 90 minutes in a regular game with a winning score line with perhaps a few minutes of ‘added time’ that a referee has decided were lost during the match due to incident or injury during the match playing time.

In a knock out tournament where there has to be a winner of match, a further thirty minutes of play might take place in which teams must try for a ‘golden goal’ to seal a victory. If the thirty minutes passes by without a score then the teams go to a penalty shoot out. The breaks at half time and between the start of extra time last fifteen minutes each and although they are called breaks players still make sure they remain warm by continuing gentle exercise.

A player in a competition could be active in their playing shirt (including pre-match warm-up) for up to three hours or more. They need to be comfortable. They need to be able to transfer the moisture from sweat generated from their exertions and they need to be able to take wear and tear. Making tackles, sliding low to keep a crucial ball in play can take its toll on a garment so it has to be of robust construction as well as flexible and comfortable.
