A gilet (pronounced ‘zheelay’) is a bit like a body warmer in its shape; it does not have sleeves and is intended to be worn over the top of other clothing items.

Gilets were originally sleeveless jackets and today they still serve the same purpose. Fastenings now are usually zip fronts and as a functional garment most styles have plenty of pockets for small tools, twine, hooks and all manner of ‘guy stuff’ that has to be at hand for any eventuality when making repairs, hunting, fishing, shooting, photographing or setting up camp.

Forerunners to body warmers, gilets were traditionally worn over chunky sweaters as man encountered the challenges of the great outdoors. Having so many useful storage compartments and pockets they are favoured by men with things to carry and wallets, phones, glasses and mp3 players can quite easily replace other essentials when worn as a leisure garment.

Comfortable to wear and a timeless classic, a gilet transcends age barriers so any man can wear one and look great. With jeans, cords, cargo pants or waterproof trousers a gilet would look terrific as a garment for country wear. Different fabrics are available, possessing different qualities so you can choose what would suit your needs best.
