Without a tie a suit can appear casual and lack professional appeal. It is such a small detail but it is a crucial one. These simple pieces of fabric just finish off an outfit with an element of panache. Although small they are an eye catching part of any ensemble even from a distance as they break the lines of a shirt at the neck line.

When in conversation with a person you will be close enough not to invade their personal space but close enough to hear them without having to shout. At this proximity you will be able to establish eye contact for effective communication and reading of any non-verbal expression that might cross their face. Your peripheral vision will pick up the detail immediately surrounding the eye area and you might not realise it but you will constantly be taking in messages from your surroundings and processing that information sub-consciously.

Some people take a step back and consciously review what they see in front of them, perhaps even passing comment and offering a compliment on your appearance. They won’t want to cross any social boundaries so may limit their observation to something that isn’t controversial, is innocuous and easily observed. “Nice tie!” Those simple words convey much more than just an appreciation of your sartorial savvy or an indication of possible envy; they confirm that you have been noticed and assessed and that a mental note has been made on your appearance.
