Shorts are not just for summer! Each PE session in school probably requires shorts to be worn as they allow freedom of movement for gymnastics, athletics and field and court games.

Part of the assessment for PE in schools is based on appropriate dress for the activity, turning up with the correct kit and footwear at all times to show an appreciation of the importance of health and safety when using equipment and working on different surfaces. Top marks don’t necessarily go to the top performers. Unless they meet all the criteria a mediocre or average performer could outclass them on the overall level achieved – it is not just skill based. Attitude, appearance and awareness rate equally with application in the overall assessment.

It ties in with commitment and discipline – both of which are essential for success at the highest level and also addresses the element of personal hygiene where children learn how their body behaves when exercising and understand the need for cleanliness to prevent rashes and infections that can spread.

If their bodies and their clothing and footwear is clean then there should be no worries about verrucas, athlete’s foot, scabies, impetigo or scrum pox – all of which can be highly contagious though easily controlled and avoided or prevented through good hygiene practice.
