An advantage that a jacket can have over some of the other popular alternatives is the use of fabrics that can make them waterproof and windproof. If children are going to be spending time outside walking the dog, visiting relatives or doing a paper round they will need to be protected against the unpredictable weather that we have in the UK.

Activities that ought to be fun can be spoiled if a person is cold or wet or suffering from the effects that a nasty gust of wind can bring. Something like feeding the ducks at the local pond which ought to be pleasant, instead can turn in to a complaining session and remembered with resentment rather than enjoyment. By wrapping your child up in a jacket with perhaps a hat, scarf and gloves or mittens too, a cold day out can still be a great day out.

Visiting theme parks and other attractions or attending bonfires and fireworks displays as part of a family day out or a birthday treat will involve more than ten or fifteen minutes outside (which might be bearable for some) so a jacket that can keep out the elements will prevent any moans or groans about the conditions if the weather turns bad or a sudden shower breaks the sunshine and threatens to spoil the fun.
