Bags suitable for taking on board a plane have to meet certain requirements. They cannot exceed specific dimensions, including wheels, handles and pockets etc. Airlines have become stricter and at Heathrow travellers in transit from Australia, the Middle East and the USA have found that their duty free, still unopened and in a sealed duty free bag with receipt cannot go through as hand luggage. As their main luggage has been forwarded to their final destination they must abandon their liquid goods like perfume, cosmetics or alcohol and find space in their hand luggage for any dry goods.

Trans Atlantic flights have larger planes and larger overhead space so dimensions for hand luggage can be greater with more cabin locker space. Changing to an internal UK flight, boarding a smaller plane, there are tighter restriction allowances for weight and dimensions. Excess baggage can be paid on certain flights with a sympathetic boarding/check-in clerk but sometimes a larger bag (previously hand luggage) may be sent to the hold.

Ensure your bag meets the restrictions of the smaller plane in your journey and be aware that these restrictions are for safety reasons. Large bags don’t fit into overhead lockers if each passenger on a full flight has a piece of hand baggage. Sorting the hold baggage to meet weight distribution guidelines for a safe flight will take time and having to remove a customer’s bags because they have withdrawn from the flight or adding new bags to the hold can cause delays.
